A Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) is an online course aimed at unlimited participation and open access via the Web. In addition to traditional course materials, such as filmed lectures, readings, and problem sets, many MOOCs provide interactive courses with user forums or social media discussions to support community interactions among students, professors, and teaching assistants (TAs), as well as immediate feedback to quick quizzes and assignments.
NPTEL is an initiative by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) designed to offer high-quality education to students and learners worldwide, providing access to courses taught by faculty from prestigious institutions such as IITs and IISc, for free. It provides web and video courses across 23 disciplines as certification courses. The certification courses aids students in gaining in-depth knowledge in the topics. It also helps in personal profile development and thus in placement. NPTELplatform also hosts video lectures covering a wide range of subjects covering the entireGATEsyllabus across Engineering and Science disciplines. NPTEL has been offering self-study courses across engineering, humanities, management and science streams for more than a decade.
To encourage more students across colleges to participate in the initiative, NPTEL local chapters are established under the headship of a faculty member of the college, who would be the Single Point of Contact (SPOC) in the colleges. The local chapter serves as an intermediary between students and NPTEL, providing students with information about upcoming courses, facilitating their active participation, and communicating any challenges they encounter to NPTEL for resolution.
